Biography
Dr Vincenzo Nardelli graduated from Politecnico di Bari (Italy), where he studied Environmental Engineering (BSc) and Civil Engineering (MSc). He then went to study for his PhD in Civil Engineering at the City University of Hong Kong, focussing on the micromechanical characterisation of granular materials. The main results of this research were included in an article published on Géotechnique, for which he was awarded the Geotechnical Research Medal from the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) in 2020.
After a post-doc at the University of Hong Kong, during which he mostly carried out experimental research on treated sands, he spent 3 years in the construction industry working as a consultant for large-scale projects, including land reclamation and tunnelling.
Prior to joining the University of Oxford in 2022, Vincenzo was a Lecturer in Civil Engineering at Birmingham City University, where he taught Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering.
Awards and Prizes
- Institution of Civil Engineers Geotechnical Research Medal (2020)
- Best journal articles (Editor’s choice) in Géotechnique Letters Vol. 6 Q3 (2016) and Vol. 7 Q3 (2017)
Research Interests
Vincenzo has a significant experience in soil testing, having carried out experimental research on natural and treated soils at different scales. He has investigated the micromechanical behaviour of granular materials and worked on the design and development of a custom experimental apparatus for micro-scale testing. He has also got a solid research background in element testing by studying the mechanical behaviour of natural clays. He recently joined the Marine Renewable Energy group of the Department of Engineering Science, focussing on offshore foundations.
His current research interests include:
- Advanced soil testing
- Micromechanics and contact behaviour of granular soils
- Design and development of experimental equipment
- Ground improvement techniques
- Offshore foundations
