Qiance Zhang BSc DPhil MEng

Biography

Dr Qiance "Quincy" Zhang is a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in TRISO, funded by National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL). He also holds a position as Honorary Research Associate at the University of Bristol.

Before joining the University of Oxford in 2024, Dr Zhang worked in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Manchester (2022) and in the School of Physics at University of Bristol (2023). He obtained his PhD from the University of Manchester under the supervision of Prof Ping Xiao and Prof Philip Withers, studying the fabrication of SiCf/SiC composites for nuclear and aerospace applications.

He is currently investigating the thermal and micro-mechanical properties of TRISO fuel particles for High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactors (HTGR). Dr Zhang is the member of many international affiliations, including Fellow of Higher Education Academy (FHEA), Member of IOM3 (MIMMM), and Individual Member of the American Ceramic Society.

  • Materials for nuclear and aerospace applications, including TRISO, graphite and claddings.
  • Advanced characterisation techniques, including in-situ XCT, synchrotron x-ray, FIB-DIC, FDTR.
