Mounir El Skafi BEng

DPhil Student

TEL: +96181826876
COLLEGE: Somerville College

Biography

Mounir comes from a lovely small city on the east coast of the Mediterranean: Saida, Lebanon. Mounir received his Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering - Design, Materials, and Manufacturing track (with high distinction, ranked 1st) from the American University of Beirut (AUB) along with a minor degree in Arabic and Near Eastern Languages. During his education at AUB, Mounir has participated in departmental research work as well as extracurricular activities.

He has worked with the Insight Club AUB to construct a supportive community to university students by balancing between physical intellectual and spiritual needs. Beyond engineering, Mounir is interested in walking and in reading classical literature. At Oxford, Mounir is studying a doctoral degree in Engineering Science through the Oxford-Qatar-Thatcher Graduate Scholarship.

Awards & Prizes

  • National Council of Scientific research full scholarship for undergraduate studies at AUB, being ranked third over Lebanon in the official Baccalaureate Exams. (2019)
  • Farouk W. Agha Endowed Engineering Excellence Award, having highest overall GPA (AUB, 2023).

  • Nicolas and Faride Moujaes Student Award in Engineering: Most Innovative Final Year Project in the Faculty: Designing, and fabricating a microfluidic transistor (AUB, 2023).

  • Oxford-Qatar-Thatcher Graduate Scholarship at Somerville College to study DPhil in Engineering Science

Research Interests

Mounir is interested in the field of solid mechanics and mechanics of composite materials. He has done research related to mechanics of round geometries and contact mechanics, failure of dendritic chains in rechargeable batteries, recycling and mechanical characterization of carbon fiber reinforced polymers, and designing and fabricating microfluidic devices.

Mounir is interested to incorporate his experience to Metal Organic Framework Materials (MOFs) in studying their mechanical properties and their composites in polymer matrices such as membranes. This includes exploring the time dependent properties of MOFs and composites at different length scales. In addition, the fracture of MOFs and their toughness is of interest to design damage tolerant structures for energy absorption applications.
