Biography
Annika’s research explores hybrid nanomaterials and tuneable nanocomposites for emerging sensing technologies. Previously, Annika graduated with a 1st Class BSc degree in Engineering Science from the Technical University of Munich (TUM, Germany) with a specialisation in aerospace engineering. She also completed the 4th year of the MEng Engineering Science (University of Oxford) having investigated optical communications for airborne systems in the Optical Wireless Communications Group. Now, with her DPhil project in the Multifunctional Materials & Composites Lab, she is the primary researcher instigating the novel application of near-field nanospectroscopy to reveal the multifaceted virtues of metal-organic framework materials at the nanoscale. When not in the lab, Annika will be found on the water competing in sailing races.
Research Interests
Annika’s doctorate research investigates the physical and chemical interactions of nanoscale framework materials – called metal-organic frameworks – with encapsulated guest molecules to yield unique properties for optoelectronics and sensing devices. Employing various spectroscopy techniques, ranging from nanoscale analytics to accelerator-based facilities, in combination with quantum mechanical calculations, her project aims to explain how and why these multifunctional nanomaterials respond to external stimuli, and more importantly, how to leverage them for the development of sensors.
Her research interests encompass:
- Nanoscience and nanotechnology
- Multifunctional materials
- Metal-organic frameworks
- Photonics and optoelectronics
- Nanospectroscopy
