Biography
Originally from London, Sam ventured north to gain his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Newcastle University, graduating in 2020. He then began his DPhil at Oxford University and the Centre of Excellence for Hybrid Thermal Propulsion Systems, in collaboration with Jaguar Land Rover and Siemens Digital Industries. Sam loves all sports, and has competed internationally in rowing and triathlon. He also has a passion for sustainability, and enjoys using engineering to combine this with yet another sport (Formula 1).
Research Interests
- Turbulence and combustion modelling
- Complex chemistry mechanisms
- Future thermal propulsion technology
- Ultra-lean combustion
Research Projects
Laminar burning velocity (LBV): Assessing the performance of a new LBV correlation developed at Oxford.
Complex chemistry in STAR-CCM+: Investigating how complex chemistry mechanisms can capture ultra-lean phenomena such as extinction and reignition, and whether this enables leaner combustion.
Turbulent jet ignition (TJI) and end-gas autoignition: Using autoignition to stabilise flame propagation through lean mixtures in a TJI system.
