Apprenticeship case study: Alfie Smith, Department of Engineering Science, University of Oxford
Alfie Smith
Apprentice IT Support Officer
Alfie is doing his IT apprenticeship with Digital Native at the Department and is also an Apprenticeship Ambassador. We spoke with Alfie about his apprenticeship and what it involves.
How is your apprenticeship structured?
I spend most of my time in the office, I work on-site 4 days a week, with 1 designated day for studying, normally spent at home.
My training provider, Digital Native, prefer to do most of their work/meetings online, however once a month we have a face to face session, with other apprentices and our coaches, to go over what we've been up to.
What was the application process like?
The application process was really easy! I found the position through the Oxford University Jobs site, I was looking because my friend had recommended it, he became an apprentice only a couple of months before me.
I filled in the form online on my lunchbreak at my previous job in a supermarket, and in the following weeks I was interviewed twice and when I got the call from HR to say I was the preferred candidate I was driving and I had to pull over!
What’s the best thing about your apprenticeship?
I love getting hands-on experience working with technology, it greatly increases my knowledge. In my role every day is different, which is great for someone like me that tends to get bored easily.
I have to pinch myself when I remember that I am getting paid to learn.
What does being an apprenticeship ambassador for the university involve?
Being an ambassador has been a fun experience so far. I've met and interacted with other apprentices in many different positions around the university. It's nice to talk to people in a similar situation, and compare experiences.
I enjoy the responsibilities of being an ambassador, I would like more people in schools to know about apprentices, and how great of an opportunity they are.
What things have you learned?
I've learnt far too much to fit into a paragraph, but that's good! I've learnt that you can gain other qualifications whilst studying for my apprenticeship - I'm currently studying for my Comptia A+ exam, a well respected entry level IT qualification.
What does a typical day look like for you in your role?
I just help as many people as I can, and that's all that's asked of me really. Every day comes with a new challenge.
